I selected this product to be used as Network Storage for my business. At just over 9 cents per gigabyte, and a full 4 TB in one small package, it seemed perfect for my needs. I was a bit concerned about connectivity because I operate a strictly Linux environment, but setup and changing settings are simple through the FireFox web browser I use, and I don't see any issues that would develop with MAC, Solaris, Windows, or anything else you could imagine. I configured the device as RAID 1, meaning each 2 TB disk is a copy of the other and if a disk fails the other should preserve all of my data until I replace the failed disk.
A drawback is that I have multiple computers accessing files on the network storage disk. Other LaCie systems allow specific users to be blocked out of certain folders, and allow read-only access to others. With this system its either all or nothing. Every user has access to everything on the drive. It makes me a bit nervous that someone can just push the delete key and erase something from the disk, including the RAID 1 backup. As long as both disks are running, the two disks mirror each other.
Another user wrote that you can only access 500 GB of the 4 TB when using a USB cable. This claim appears to be true, and it clearly doesn't state any of this in the products promotional documentation. Fortunately for me I have my device connected via LAN, and have no intention of using a USB cable. Still, it's unfair to the consumer.
Also promoted is the devices ability to download torrents. I'm not sure what they were looking at when they wrote this. There is a download section in the products "Dashboard" function (accessible via web browser). You can use it to download local files, and files with a web address; but there is no device capable of torrent functions, communicating with trackers, connecting to peers, etc. Since I don't download anything or use torrent files, its a non issue for me. But again, consumers make purchase decisions on this information - unfair.
The device has an eco-friendly function which I like. About 20 minutes after closing time I hear the disks spin down, saving power and possibly extending disk life. Wake up is quick and invisible to the user the next time someone access a file or folder located on the device.
The device seems to run cool. There appears to be a fan inside (I can see it from the back). I haven't noticed it run at all yet, and the case remains cool. The device is much quieter than previous smaller drives that I have owned.
Overall: the device works well for my application, although I may reconfigure RAID to just allow me to use the full 4 TB, then purchase another device and use it as a backup. This way I can have a relatively recent copy of everything if an employee intentionally deletes data important to me. My only real disappointment is that I couldn't know this would be an issue from reading any of the promotional material. Nor could I know about the USB limitation and downloading limitation.
