I bought a Mac Mini with a 120GB hard drive in April 2009 so I've been hunting around for a good back-up drive to store my media and to work with Apple's Time Machine. After a few hours of researching external drives, I realized that, unlike other products, there were no clear winners. I wanted Firewire 800 capability but owners of other FW800 capable drives complained that the drives dismount when the mini goes to sleep, forcing them to connect via USB 2.0. I decided to gamble my money on this not-yet-reviewed Fantom Drive because of its low power consumption, the positive reviews of other Fantom drives, and at least the outside chance that the drive would not dismount with FW800. After a week of running time machine, it appears the gamble paid off. My mini sleeps after fifteen minutes and every time I wake it up, the drive is still mounted. [9 July 09 Update: FW connection did not continue to work with Time Machine. I had to switch to USB2.0, works perfectly.] I'm pleased. The drive warms up a bit. It is quiet but not half as quiet as the drive in my mini. It is small and attractive.
